RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS (ISTN7RM/ISTN4RM)
MODULE OUTLINE 2012
Research topic: Facebook Social Capital at University of KwaZulu-Natal
Statement of purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between Facebook use and students’ perception about social capital.
Research Questions
RQ1: What impact (if any) does FSC have on students?
RQ2: How does Facebook use influence the formation and maintenance of FSC?
RQ3: Why do student leverage FSC in the ways they do?
Theoretical Framework - Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)
SCT was taken from the work of Bandura (1986) and was modified by Chiu (2006) who also did a study on the subject of social capital. SCT describe the elements of human behaviour such as reciprocal interaction of personal factors, triadic, behaviour, dynamic, and social network (Bandura, 1986). Self-efficacy and outcome expectation are factors that affect human functioning and they are the core for this theory. Self-efficacy is “a judgment of one's ability to organize and execute given types of performances. Self-efficacy is “a judgment of one's ability to organize and execute given types of performances,” whereas an outcome expectation is “a judgment of the likely consequence such performances will produce”(Bandura, 1997) (p.604).
